Why Does My Power Bank Stop Charging My Device at 80%?

If you notice that your iPhone or iPad stops charging at 80% when using a power bank, don't worry—this is actually a common phenomenon. Here are some possible reasons and solutions to help you better understand and resolve this issue.

Optimized Battery Charging on iPhone

In iOS 13 and later versions, Optimized Battery Charging is designed to reduce battery wear and extend its lifespan by minimizing the time your iPhone spends fully charged. When this feature is enabled, your iPhone may delay charging beyond 80% in certain conditions. It uses on-device machine learning to understand your daily charging habits and will only activate when it predicts the iPhone will be connected to a charger for an extended period. The algorithm ensures your iPhone is fully charged by the time you unplug it.

When Optimized Battery Charging is enabled, a notification will appear on the lock screen informing you when your iPhone will be fully charged. If you need your iPhone to reach full charge sooner, touch and hold the notification and then tap "Charge Now."

When you set up your iPhone, Optimized Battery Charging is enabled by default.

To change the charging options:

  • For iPhone 14 and earlier models, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging, then turn off Optimized Battery Charging.

  • For iPhone 15 models, to choose between Optimized Battery Charging, 80% Limit, and None, go to Settings > Battery > Charging Optimization, then select an option.

Overheat Protection Strategy on iPhone

Your iPhone may become warm while charging. To extend battery life, the software may limit charging when the battery reaches 80% if it gets too hot. This message will appear on the lock screen and in Settings > Battery: "Charging paused. Charging will resume when [device] returns to normal temperature."

Follow these guidelines to resume charging your device as soon as possible;

  • If your device Is too hot, move it to a cooler place, away from direct sunlight.

  • If it is in use, lock the screen or put it to sleep.

Note: Your iPhone may stop charging at 80% due to overheating without displaying a message.

80% Limit on iPhone 15 and Later Models

For iPhone 15 and later models, you can choose between Optimized Battery Charging, 80% Limit, and None.

When you select the 80% Limit, your iPhone will charge to around 80% and then stop. If the battery level drops to 75%, it will resume charging until it reaches around 80% again.

Note: When the 80% Limit is enabled, your iPhone will occasionally charge to 100% to maintain an accurate estimate of the battery's charge status.
