What Should I Do If Protected Videos Won't Play On My Mac When Connected to a DisplayLink Monitor? (A83B3)

When using an external DisplayLink monitor with a Mac, you may notice that protected content (e.g., iTunes, HBO, Amazon Prime, Netflix, Disney+, YouTube TV, Udemy) shows a black screen while the sound continues to play. This occurs because macOS and the DisplayLink driver use a unique rendering method that prevents protected content from playing on any connected monitor. To fix this, try disabling hardware acceleration in your browser. (Note: This method only works in Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. It does not work in Firefox or Safari.)

To disable hardware acceleration:

  •  Open Chrome or Edge.

  • Click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.

  • Go to Settings > System and toggle off Use hardware acceleration when available.

  • Restart the browser.
